Alderley gains a
future proof platform
with Dynamics AX

What We Did

Alderley is a leading designer and manufacturer of bespoke metering, hydraulic control systems and water treatment solutions for the global oil and gas industry. Established in the late 1950’s, the companies that today, make up Alderley, have been leaders in their field and now employ over 420 people across the UK, Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.

The company required a solution to better manage the complex design, build, installation and maintenance of its customised capital equipment, with a focus on the control of project quality and cost.

In 2012, Alderley selected Microsoft Dynamics AX as its business management solution of choice. The company felt Dynamics AX would provide a solid foundation for growth through the adoption of business process improvement and the best practice inherent in the software solution. Dynamics AX had the pedigree required to underpin investment; it offered stability as a platform backed by Microsoft, the agility to perform to business demands in the future and a global partner ecosystem to support the product.

Michael England, IT Director for Alderley plc, commented that “Alderley is a projects driven business and therefore, the effective control of projects, through the functionality of the Projects Module in AX, was critical.  As the implementation progressed it became clear that Alderley’s demands on the Project Management module were at the frontier of this particular functionality and a number of technical challenges were unearthed.”

After identifying that an upgrade to Dynamics AX 2012 R3 would resolve the issues faced by Alderley, the company turned to Ardent Solutions, to support the existing implementation and lead the company through the upgrade to R3. Ardent Solutions provided a considered and competitive proposal that demonstrated an effective plan to move Alderley’s Dynamics AX implementation forward.

Ardent Solutions delivered a two-pronged upgrade plan.  This initially focused on the move to R3, to prevent further issues, and then looked to rectify the data issues which had occurred as a result of the challenges with R2. The upgrade was not easy but guided by Ardent, the transition went smoothly.


Following the successful migration to R3, Alderley now has a stable, scalable solution that the company can begin to expand upon. Confidence is growing and as a result of the R3 implementation, Alderley’s user satisfaction rating of Dynamics AX increased by 18% last year, a testament to the hard work that both Alderley and Ardent Solutions put into the implementation. The planned introduction of work breakdown structures within Dynamics AX will give the company the increased level of control it seeks in its projects. By linking Dynamics AX to Microsoft Project, Alderley will not only be able to control and analyse the procurement process at a granular level, but will also be able to review associated labour costs.

Alderley has also recently rolled out the HR functionality in Dynamics AX to better manage its network of engineers and other employees, and it is now expanding its ‘after-market’ services portfolio, utilising the Microsoft solution.
